Pot o' Gold

So Happy St. Patrick's Day! I totally forgot that you are supposed to pinch someone for not wearing green today. Luckily I didn't get pinched because I was definately wearing the soft pink casmere sweater my sister gave me for Christmas. I hadn't wore it yet, I guess I was saving it for the right occasion to wear it with a nice pair of slacks. Well this morning, somehow I started running late, and I realized I'd have to iron all of my blouses if I wanted to wear them. I knew I didn't have time for that, so frantically I tore through my closet looking for a nice shirt I could wear that didn't need ironing. I found the box with my sweater in it, all nice and new with the tag on it. I was so glad to see that sweater! I put it on with my nice black no press slacks, and was ready to leave in like 5 minutes.

So luckily I only worked a half day. The kids I subbed for would have definately been a handful if I had to deal with them for the entire day. But as it was, they watched a two hour movie, then had 15 minutes to work on a social studies worksheet, then I took them off to music class. They came back from music class all of five minutes before the bell rang, so that made my day rather easy.

I also bribed the kids. I am not ashamed to throw some good old fashioned bribery around when dealing with 5th graders. I told the kids that in honor of St. Patrick's Day I brought with me a "Pot of Gold" and that if they behaved, they would get a piece of the treasure. Actually, it was a ziplock bag full of Laffy Taffy. But it kept the kids, for the most part, well behaved. For the most part!

Fast foward to the end of the day. I was completely distracted when this boy came up to me and asked me "how old are you?" Normally I would never have answered that, but like I said, I was distracted, and blurted out "24" before I could stop myself. And you know what this 5th grader, who was 10 years old, said in response? He said "Wow, you're the same age as my mom! She's going to be 25 in June." Yes, the kid's mom is 24. Which means, that if I had gotten pregnant at 14, I could have a 10 year old child right now. Oh my god. Yes there were a couple of girls my freshman year of high school who were pregnant, but geez oh pete. I can say full heartily thank God above I do not have a child yet, espeically a 10 year old.

So yeah, that's been my St. Patrick's Day. Ah my head hurts! Subbing always leaves me with a headache.

I never give out my age. Mainly because it doesn't matter, at the high school they think that since I'm around there age we must be peers, so every once in a while when they guess my age I have to explain to them that yeah years wise we may be within 10 years of each other, but experience wise since they haven't been to college and I've been and completed it actually makes me much older than them. It's mostly the seniors that give me the hard time about being close to their age. Middle schoolers can't tell how old I am.
